Charles City  40,  West Point 14

Varsity Playoff Game on September 20, 2011

The Charles City Panthers heading into this varsity football matchup against West Point with limited practice time and playing 2 games in the last 10 days, including a loss to Amelia County just 4 days prior.  Despite this, the Panther were fired up to get their first win of the season against the West Point Pointers.  The last two years, the games with the Pointers have come down to the wire.  Two years ago, the Pointers beat Charles City 28-27 and last year the Panthers won by that same score 28-27.   This years game would not be so close as the Panthers played well throughout the game and came away with their first victory of the season by a score of 40-14.

The Panthers got on the board first when QB Avery Jones flicked a touchdown pass to Dominique Williams.  The 2 point conversion was good and the Panthers led 8-0.

The Panthers would stop the pointers and get the ball back.  Jones’ pass was picked off by West Point’s L.A. Allen.  However, a few moments later the panther’s Terrance Banks would snag a pass from pointer QB Mike Anderson and return it for a touchdown.  The conversion failed and the panthers extended their lead to 14.

The pointers would answer back quickly on the next possession as Anderson would hook up with Allen for a 61 yard touchdown pass.  The extra point kick was good and the points cut the lead, 14-7.

A few possessions later, a bad snap on a punt by the Panthers led to a fumble recovery and return for a touchdown by Jahlil Green.  After the successful extra point kick the game was tied up at 14 apiece.

The Panthers would answer right back with a drive that was capped off by senior running back Justin Brown first touchdown of his career.  The conversion failed and the Panthers led 20-14 at the half.

In the 4th quarter the Panthers would score 3 more unanswered touchdowns.  Avery Jones ran for a touchdown to put the panthers up 28-14.  Jones would then connect with Jaelen Cotman on a touchdown pass and Justin Brown would finish the scoring with his second touchdown run of the night to make it 40-14.

The pointers stayed with the panthers early, but things began to unravel for them soon after including their coach getting ejected by the referees.  West Point was led by L.A. Allen who had 90 yards receiving and had several interceptions.

Avery Jones had over 400 all purpose yards and accounted for 3 touchdowns (two passing, one rushing).  Dominique Williams had 2 interceptions plus one fumble recovery on defense and 81 yards receiving, with one touchdown on offense.  The defense was led by Cruz Adkins and Jaelen Williams.  Adkins had 10 tackles and Williams had 7 tackles.  Both players shared a sack.
