Charles City Panthers vs. West Point

The visiting Charles City County Panthers beat the West Point Pointers in a thrilling game by a score of 28 to 27. This was the same score as last year when Charles City lost to West Point, 27 to 28. Charles City’s big plays and fumble recoveries were enough to overcome the Pointers and their strong running game attack.

West Point got on the board first during their first drive of the game. Running Back Scott Walton ran for a 5 yard touchdown. West Point made it 7-0 after kicking an extra point.

Charles City would respond on their next drive. On the second play of the 2nd quarter, Quarterback Trevor Jones would complete a pass to Dominique Williams which resulted in a 34 yard touchdown. The two point conversion failed and West Point was ahead 7 to 6.

On the next drive, West Point in their double wing formation, attacked the Panthers by utilizing a variety of running backs, including University of Richmond recruit Aaron Roane who is one of the area’s best runners. The drive was capped off by a touchdown run from 4 yards out. After the extra point kick, the Pointers were up 14 to 6.

After the kickoff, Charles City drove the ball down the field but would later turn it over on downs. West Point got the ball back at around midfield, but on the very first play, Roane fumbled the ball and it was recovered by the Panthers. After a Charles City penalty, the Panthers faced a 1st and 20. On the next play Trevor Jones rolled out of the pocket and completed a long pass for the first down and put them into the red zone. A few plays later, Joseph Tabb would run into the endzone from 3 yards out. Joseph Tabb would also run in the two point conversion to tie the game at 14 apiece.

After the kickoff, West Point couldn’t get anything going on offense as the Panther defense shut them down. West Point found themselves deep in Panther territory with only about two minutes remaining before halftime and elected to punt the ball. This would prove to be costly as Trevor Jones returned the punt and sprinted 60 yards to the endzone to put the Panthers up 20 to 14. The 2 point conversion attempt failed.

West Point got the ball back and would get the lead back with just under a minute left before the half after another touchdown run and extra point kick.  The score at halftime was 21 to 20.

During the 3rd quarter West Point got another touchdown run when Aaron Roane ran into the endzone from just a few inches from the goaline. Instead of going for an extra point quick as they had done on the previous three touchdowns, West Point decided to go for the two point conversion. This would prove to be a costly mistake. On the conversion attempt, West Point was just inches from entering the endzone when Avery Jones stripped the ball away and recovered the fumble, preventing the conversion. The score was West Point 27, Charles City 20 going into the fourth quarter.

After a Charles City drive stalled out, West Point got the ball back with the intention of putting the game away. On the 5th play of their drive, West Point ran the ball to the outside when Dominick Barbour stripped the ball away from the runner and returned it the other way for a 72 yard fumble return. This put the score at West Point 27, Charles City 26 just before the conversion attempt. A penalty on the Panthers after the fumble return, put the Panthers further back on the two point conversion attempt.

Despite being over 15 yards out on the attempt, Trevor Jones found Dominic Jones in the end zone for a pass completion which put the Panthers up by one point.

On West Point’s next possession, they would eventually be stopped on fourth down just missing the first down. The Panthers had a chance to put the game away for good, but a long drive that included several sensational runs by Trevor Jones eventually stalled out, deep in West Point territory.  During this drive, Trevor Jones left the game several times due to an injury to his leg that was bothering him.

West Point would get the ball back with just over a minute left in the game.  With time running out, West Point abandoned their running game and went to the air. The Pointers were able to get several long pass completions and got into field goal range after the Panthers committed a penalty which stopped the clock. The Pointers went for the win with their field goal kicker who had converted all three of his extra point attempts during the game. West Point lined up for the kick, but the attempt just missed the field goal bar as time ran out…..Game Over.

Charles City is now 2-0 as West Point goes to 3-1.
