Panthers lose to Surry County Cougars in Playoff game 8 to 6

Football Playoff Game on November 17, 1995

The Charles City County Panthers came up just short of a second upset of the Surry County Cougars during a Region A Division 1 playoff game. Two weeks ago, the panthers crushed the previously undefeated Cougars.

During the rematch in the playoffs, Surry came out with the victory with a final score of 8 to 6.

The Surry Cougars scored first during a long drive in the second quarter. Surry Quarterback Jerome Haskett ended the drive by threwing a 15 yard touchdown to Daniel Williams. The Cougars converted the two point conversion with a pass from Haskett to Ben Warren.

After halftime, Charles City was stopped on downs and Surry got the ball. The Panther defense stopped Surry and forced them to punt. Charles City got the ball at the Surry 48 yard line. Charles City drove to the Surry 25 yard line and was faced with a fourth down with two yards to go. Charles City went for the first down and got it after Terry Paige ran 11 yards on the play. Charles City scored when quarterback L.D. Brown ran it in from one yard out. Charles City went for a two point conversion but running back Terry Paige was stopped. This would be the final scoring of the game.

The game ended on an interception throw by Charles City.

Charles City out gained Surry in passing and rushing yardage. Charles City had 144 rushing yards to Surry’s 137. Charles City passed for 52 yards compared to Surry’s 47 yards. Terry Paige ran for 115 yards on 19 carries for Charles City.

Charles City ended their season with a 4-7 record.

Varsity Football Game on November 3, 1995

The Surry County Cougars came into the game undefeated with an 8-0 record and ranked #4 in the Group A state poll, but left the game by getting blown out by the Charles City County Panthers who had previously only won 2 games during the season.

The Panthers socred first during the first quarter when L.D. Brown threw a pass to Graham Charity for a 44 yard touchdown. Brown scored again in the second quarter on a two yard run and the Panthers were up 12 to 0 at halftime.

In the 3rd quarter the Surry Cougars blocked a Charles City punt in the end zone for their first and only points. The Cougars tried a two point conversion but failed.

The score was 12-6 going into the fourth quarter when Chuckie Wallace scored three times. Wallace ran for two touchdowns of 6 and 2 yards. Later, Wallace converted a two point conversion run after Irving Bradby intercepted a Surry pass and ran it the other way for the final touchdown of the night.

The final score was 34-6.

Charles City also shocked Surry last season when the Panthers got their only win at the hands of the Cougars. The Panthers now have a 3-6 record and the Cougars are 8-1.

Panthers lose to New Kent Trojans 34 to 12

Varsity Football Game on October , 1995

The New Kent Trojans took control in the second half and beat the visiting Charles City Panthers with a final score of 34 to 12.

New Kent got on the board first with an 76 yard touchdown run by Michael Brandon in the second quarter. The Panthers responded when they got the ball back. Quarterback Tony Martinez found L.D. Brown for a 42 yard pass completion. New Kent would later commit a penalty and Panthers were at the 10 yard line when Martinez found Irving Bradby in the end zone for a touchdown pass. The first half ended with the score tied at 6-6.

During the second half, the New Kent got good field position after Tony Martinez fumbled the ball and Trojan Tommy Wilson recovered it at the 20 yard line for New Kent. A short time later, Trojan running back Robert Jefferson for a touchdown from 18 yards out.

In the fourth quarter, the Trojans erupted for 3 touchdowns. The first of these three touchdowns came on the first play of the fourth quarter. Running back Earl Knight ran for a 71 yard touchdown. The Panthers got the ball back but Martinez threw an interception to George Otey was returned for a touchdown. After giving the ball up on downs, the Trojans got the ball back and made a drive that totaled almost 60 yards. The drive was capped off by Victor Randall’s touchdown run of 39 yards.

The Panthers got the ball back on a kickoff and L.D. Brown returned it for an 85 yard touchdown.

New Kent ran for 326 yards on the ground. Brandon had 113 yards, Knight ran for 79 yards, Jefferson added 76 yards and Randall finished with 52 rushing yards. Charles City finished with negative 12 yards on the ground but did have over 100 yards through the air.

Panthers beat West Point Pointers 34 to 6

Varsity Football Game on September 29, 1995

The Charles City Panther Football team visited the West Point Pointers and came away with a decisive victory. The Panthers were led by Quarterback Tony Martinez who threw for two touchdowns and also intercepted a pass while playing on the defensive side.

Charles City’s first touchdown was called back after Sherod Jones ran into the end zone. The officials called a penalty on a teammate who helped push Jones into the end zone. Two plays later, Tony Martinez made up for this by throwing a touchdown to Irving Bradby for an eleven yard touchdown pass. L.D. Brown ran for and got the two point conversion.

West Point was putting on a long drive when Martinez picked off Pointer QB Tommy Reamer’s pass in the end zone. Martinez downed the ball and the Panthers got the ball at the 20 yard line. On the very next play, Graham Charity ran all the way for an 80 yard touchdown. Charity finished the game with 140 rushing yards on 10 attempts.

Later in the game, Panther L.D. Brown returned a punt and ran it all the way back for an 82 yard TD. When the Pointers got the ball back, they threw another interception which went to L.D. Brown who returned it for a 47 touchdown. However, a clipping penalty during the return took the TD back. A few plays later, L.D. Brown ran for a 22 yard touchdown.

West Point finally scored in the 3rd quarter when Paul Hart ran for a 39 yard touchdown.

Tony Martinez threw his second touchdown of the game to Irving Bradby for a 26 yard touchdown. L.D. Brown made the two point conversion on a run. Martinez finished the game with 91 passing yards to go along with the two touchdown passes. Martinez completed 6 of 9 passes.

The Panthers totaled 222 rushing yards compared to the Pointers’ 149 yards.

Charles City now has a 2-2 record.
